  • NaPoWriMo Prompt 6

Acrostic based on line(s) of favorite poem

    Come away O human child

To the waters and the wild.

WB Yeats – “The Stolen Child.“

Come as you are, if you’re not closed

    Away – to stand vigil.

O look into what may be left of your heart

Human, beating for the catkin, the wondering

Child, the lowing calf, the Catalpas stretching

To the disappearing horizon, for all

    The memories made of April

Waters pouring from the sky. Look.

And remember what is leaking from

The day you are given. Then trust any

Wild impulse you have to move it all from doom.

  • Spelt again, Mater?

    We’re the only kids

    in the entire Empire,

    from Rome to Gaul

    to Asia Minor,

    who only get Spelt

    for breakfast?

    Every single day!

    Do you even care, Mater?

    What about adding

    Cinnamon Crunch

    or HoneySmacks

    to your shopping list, Mater?

    At Aunt Demeter’s

    the pantry is full

    of variety packs.

    Our very cousins

    get to choose.

    No Spelt for them.

    Antonio says

    Frosted Flakes

    are just grrreat.

    And, according

    to Hecate

    ALL the cool kids

    are eating Froot Loops

    with Marshmallows.

    Marshmallows, Mater!

    Mater, please? Can we just

    have a spell

    without Spelt?

    Please, Mater?

  • Place suet in your first stanza and see who comes to feed.

Find a raven in the rain. Decorate a tent with the fifth color you see in its wings

Let the tent shelter an image waiting to be born.

Let the image be a beech nut plucked from a failed line taking hold in a new tercet.

Recognize you’ve written an elegy. Add black bunting.

Figure out if it’s too late to revise, or introduce a turn that changes everything.
